The Australia Awards scholarships

The Australia Awards are prestigious international scholarships funded by the Australian Government offering the next generation of global leaders an opportunity to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. They are designed to promote knowledge, education links and enduring ties between Australia, its neighbors and the global community.

Eligibility Criteria

Applications for Australia Awards Scholarships for the 2021 selection round/2022 intake open on 1 February 2021 and close on 30 April 2021. All applications must be online. Hard copy applications will not be accepted.

To be eligible to apply for the Australia Awards, you must:

  • be a Vietnamese citizen residing in and applying for the scholarship from Vietnam
  • not be a citizen of Australia, hold permanent residency in Australia or be applying for a visa to live in Australia permanently
  • not be married to or engaged to/or be de facto of a person who holds, or is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency, at any time during the application, selection or mobilisation phases
  • not be a current serving military personnel
  • not have previously received a long-term Australia Award unless you have resided outside of Australia for twice the length of the total time that you were in Australia (for example, a previous awardee who has been on an Australia Awards Scholarship in Australia for four years will not be eligible to apply for another Australia Awards Scholarship until they have resided outside Australia for eight years)
  • have completed a formal (‘chính quy‘) undergraduate degree
  • commit to return to work in Vietnam for at least two years after you finish your course in Australia
  • have at least 24 months’ relevant recent work experience in Vietnam, except for Equity of Access Applicants who are required to have at least 12 months’ work experience. Evidence of work experience must be provided on application
  • not be applying for a scholarship for a course of study at an academic level lesser than they have already achieved (eg be applying for a Masters scholarship when they already hold a PhD)
  • not be applying for another degree at the same level (for example: if you already have a Masters degree, you cannot apply for a second Masters degree even in a different subject area, and if you do your application will be made ineligible)
  • have a valid IELTS Certificate or TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic equivalents. These certificates are valid if the test dates are on or after 1 January 2020. Valid certificates must be submitted with the on-line application by the application closing date for applicants who are not from provincial agencies and Equity of Access applicants. Certificates received after the application closing date will not be accepted.

  • Governance and Economic Growth (economics, competition, international trade, public policy, public finance management, corporate finance, law to support economic integration, entrepreneurship and innovation)
  • Infrastructure and Transport (project management and financing, traffic forecasting, transport engineering, social and environmental safeguards, urban transport planning and management, transport master planning, public-private partnership, transport economics, road safety and audit, logistics management)
  • Water and sanitation (water management, water engineering, water quality and supply systems, water and waste water, water governance, water security, drought management, marine pollution)
  • Education (education management, institutional governance, vocational education management)
  • Gender Equality (gender and development, women’s studies)
  • Agriculture and Rural Development (Agricultural sciences, agribusiness, agricultural economics, rural development, sustainable tourism management, food safety, aquaculture)
  • Regional Stability and Human Rights (cyber security, criminology and public governance, international law, international human rights law, maritime sustainability and maritime security), international law of the sea
  • Disability (including social work, special education)
  • Climate Change (including disaster risk reduction), Energy (including energy security, energy planning, energy sector reform, renewable energy)
  • Innovation (science and technology transfer and commercialisation)
  • Health (including research, health systems strengthening, and degrees that support Vietnam’s COVID-19 recovery)

Studies in other fields (except Master of Business Administration, Information Technology hardware and software, Medicine, Pharmacy, Communication / Media / Journalism) will be considered on the basis of merit.
