SCHOOL OF CHEMICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING |
The School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering was established on Sept. 14th, 2022 from the integration two departments, Department of Environmental Engineering & Department of Chemical Engineering. With the “job-ready” philosophy, the education program for chemical engineers and environmental engineers at International University is designed to meet the needs of the global labor market and for qualified engineers having practical, good English and proficient skills in the field of chemistry and environment.

The School of Chemical & Environmental Engineering aspires to be a place where quality and prestigious chemical and environmental engineers are trained. Chemical and environmental engineers trained in the discipline will be able to meet the needs of the global job market by applying basic knowledge to solve a wide range of problems in the industry. The laboratory system consists of experimental (i.e., Organic/Inorganic Chemistry*, Physical & Analytical Chemistry*, Environmental Teaching, Environmental Treatment, Engineering, Microbiology* and Process Engineering*) and modeling/simulation (i.e., Computational Chemistry) laboratories. These labs provide students with an opportunity to learn about the latest advances in chemical and environmental engineering. Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (CEE) – International University – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City and the Foreign Service Center (FSC) – Department of External Relations Ho Chi Minh City – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on June 14, 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City.
Today, on June 14th, 2023, in Ho Chi Minh City, the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (CEE) – International University – Vietnam National University HCMC and the Foreign Service Center (FSC) – Department of External Relations Ho Chi Minh City – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the aim of creating internship opportunities for students, connecting with businesses, providing job opportunities, and fostering international integration in education and training within the academic setting.
The MOU is the result of close collaboration between CEE and FSC to create favorable conditions for CEE students to intern in organizations and businesses both domestically and internationally. This provides students with practical experiences, enhances their skills and expertise, and allows them to experience working in an international environment, thus laying a solid foundation for their future careers.
Furthermore, the MOU emphasizes the establishment of partnerships between CEE and FSC with businesses to create employment opportunities for graduating students and assist them in building professional networks in the field of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. This opens up job prospects for students after graduation. Through the connection between the university and the business sector, students will have access to career opportunities, meet leading experts in the industry, and explore more about their areas of interest.
Importantly, the MOU also highlights the strengthening of educational partnerships, and international integration skills in the classroom. CEE and FSC will promote exchange activities, workshops, and knowledge-sharing among experts, lecturers, and students from both sides. This contributes to enhancing the quality of education and ensuring the best preparation for students as they integrate into the international working environment.
Through the signing of this MOU, CEE and FSC reaffirm their commitment to improving the quality of education, providing opportunities for studying and working in an international environment for students, and creating favorable conditions for the linkage between the education sector and businesses.
This MOU signing marks a significant milestone in providing development opportunities for CEE students and contributes to promoting international integration and developing high-quality human resources in the field of Chemical and Environmental Engineering in Ho Chi Minh City.
The School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering maintains three lab facilities that provide students with the opportunity to learn by conducting experiment. These dedicated spaces allow students to experiment with scientific concepts and develop critical research skills in a safe and engaging environment. The lab facilities also foster innovative research conducted by the lecturers and researchers of the School. The lab facilities include: Environmental Teaching Lab, Environmental Treatment Lab, and Engineering Lab, with a total investment of 300,000 USD. We also have one collaborative laboratory unit Laboratory for Chemistry, Food and Environment Researches and Analysis (LCFERA) for multidisciplinary research in the fields of life sciences, chemistry and food, food technology and environment, climate change, chemistry and environment.
Environmental Teaching Lab was established in 2019 with a total floor plan of 90 m2, which has been equipped with modern environmental analysis equipment sponsored by Vietnam National University HCMC and International University.
Engineering Lab was established in 2023 with a total floor plan of 70 m2, which has been equipped with modern engineering models.
Laboratory for Chemistry, Food and Environment Researches and Analysis (LCFERA) was established in 2023 with a total floor plan of 90 m2, which has been equipped with state-of-the-art analysis equipment. LCFERA is shared between the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Food Technology.

Program Objectives
PO1. Graduates should have general, fundamental, and advanced knowledge focusing on the field of environmental engineering: water-wastewater treatment, air pollution control engineering, and solid waste management in order to solve environmental issues and continue their study at higher level.

Q&A
Admission to the IU is competitive, the university provides several ways to select outstanding students and help the candidates increase their admission chances. Since the AY 2017-2018, the IU admission has been based on candidates’ performance obtained from either of the six schemes as below:
(1) National High School Graduation Exam: based on the total score of three subjects that students have registered for their expected programmes (applied since 2018).
(2) Admission priority of VNU-HCM: excellent students from high schools designated by VNU-HCM, based on the average score of three subjects during the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades (applied since 2021).
(3) Enrollment without entrance exam: the best students based on the regulation from MOET on selection and registration, or the best students at the high schools designated by VNU-HCM (applied since 2018).
(4) Results from the Scholastic Aptitude Exam held by VNU-HCM or VNU (applied since 2019).
(5) Admission for candidates with International Baccalaureate: based on GPAs of three years and certificates such as Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT), American College Testing (ACT), International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge International Examinations A-Level (A-Level), ATAR – Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, ….etc. etc. (applied since 2022).
(6) Academic Records of high schools (applied for twinning programmes): based on the average score of three subjects during the 10th, 11th and 12th grades (applied since 2022).
The selection from either scheme is made by taking the candidates with the highest scores down until the corresponding quota is filled. The quota for each scheme is varied each year depending on the recruitment strategy of IU. Information about student intake policy is updated and published every year in the IU admission brochure and the IU website.
- For national students
- The national university entrance exam. The obtained scores of a candidate participating in the national university entrance exam organized by MOET are valid for admission to all universities. Based on the test results, MOET decides the minimum score for a student to be admitted to a university programme. The IU Recruitment Committee will decide the admission score for each IU programme based on the quota assigned for VNU-HCM by MOET. The scores vary each year; however, they must be higher than the minimum scores set by MOET. The potential candidates applying to each programme take the aforementioned examinations which consist of three subjects: mathematics, chemistry and physics (for block A) or mathematics, chemistry and biology (for block B) or mathematics, English and physics (for block A1).
- IU Student Admission Panel will decide on the case by case for candidates who select other schemes.
- For international students
- International students are those who do not follow the Vietnamese MOET’s standardized curriculum. The IU announces the admission process for international applicants on the IU website. The international applicants are required to attend the interviews with the Admission Committee and achieve the SAT which is equivalent to the entrance examination decided by the IU Student Admission Panel. When they pass, IU issues the decision of admission so that they can pursue the IU programme.
- Students from overseas universities can be transferred to IU programmes. The Student Admission Panel screens and interviews applicants for admission. Students from other IU departments or schools or those of the twinning programme can be transferred to another IU programme. The programmes that admit those students must have enough slots in their quotas and the number of transferred students must not exceed 10% of the quota. Their applications and potential transferred credits are examined by the Departmental Committee. The OAA and the Board of Presidents give the final approval.
- English entrance tests
- All academic programmes in the IU are taught, learned and communicated using English. An English entrance test is necessary to ensure all students who are eligible for studying at the IU are good at English can pursue IU’s education. Therefore, all students who are selected from a specific selection or passed the national entrance exam must take the English entrance test administered by IU. Depending on the results they may have to take some academic English courses to improve their proficiency before entering the regular programme.
- Admission procedure for national students
- After receiving the official admission announcement from the institution, in order to become students of IU, the applicants have to follow the enrollment steps as below:

- Submit the tuition fee and other fees (the tuition fee just only can be refunded in special case(s) such as enrollment for military training or sickness)

Similar to national students, after submitting a full application package, including proofs of a high school diploma, official transcript and/or international certificates, the international students must attend an interview session with the Admission Committee to officially become IU students.

In addition to the admission criteria, IU also has its own scholarship eligibility criteria for the students who got high scores in the National high school graduation examination (scheme 1), excellent candidates from high schools (scheme 2), candidates without entrance exam (scheme 3), and students with high scores from the Scholastic Aptitude Exams (scheme 4) each year. This policy is one of the factors that attract excellent and highly qualified students to the programmes at IU.

Does studying Environmental Engineering require students to have a good understanding of social knowledge?
Understanding social knowledge is an advantage when studying Environmental Engineering. Any technical or environmental management solution is determined based on the context and social needs. Recognizing the importance of social knowledge in these two fields, the training program of the major is designed using the CDIO approach, which is based on social needs to determine the student learning outcomes, and subsequently develop the curriculum and training plans. Within this framework, social knowledge and skills related to the field, such as understanding politics and laws, knowledge of the business environment, teamwork skills, and communication skills, are integrated and taught in the program.
For majors related to the environment, do candidates need to excel in Chemistry or Biology, or are there any specific requirements for the field?
The Environmental field is related to the application of knowledge in the natural sciences. Therefore, candidates who wish to pursue this field are not necessarily required to excel in Chemistry or Biology. However, if candidates excel in Chemistry or Biology, it can be an advantage for in-depth research and application of knowledge in managing and addressing environmental issues.
Similar to other fields in Engineering and Technology, candidates interested in Environmental studies should have a passion for exploring the environment, discovering various techniques, technologies, and tools for addressing environmental issues.
Does Environmental Engineering program at our university have distinctive features that attract students (such as exchange programs, internships abroad, and internship support)?
In addition to the unique integrated training program and modern facilities at the International University, the exchange programs and internships abroad are also special features of these two fields at the International University. Every year, the International University organizes numerous exchange programs and internships. The faculty members have graduated from foreign universities and have research collaborations with renowned institutions worldwide, providing students with opportunities for research internships abroad.
My English speaking skills may be a bit weak, but my other skills are quite good, so can I keep up with the curriculum?
English proficiency is a common issue among new students at the university. Students admitted to the International University will take an English proficiency test at the beginning of the course, either the TOEFL iBT or IELTS. The results are used to classify students’ English proficiency levels.
Students can enroll directly in the official program if they achieve a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 60 or an IELTS score of 6.0. If students do not meet the minimum English proficiency requirements, they will undergo intensive English classes for one or two semesters, depending on their proficiency level.
The intensive English program is designed with different levels, following the TOEFL iBT/IELTS format, to help students gain the necessary abilities and confidence to pursue the regular program.
Students who already have English certificates (TOEFL iBT, IELTS) will be placed in classes according to their corresponding proficiency levels.
Additionally, students can become members of English clubs such as the Film Club and English Speaking Club to further develop and enhance their listening, speaking, and presentation skills in front of an audience.
